None of that corporate structure matters to a homeowner. What matters is that the badge tells you who made the appliance and almost nothing about what the appliance actually is.
In Britain the range splits into three broad groups. There are small electric storage water heaters, sold over the years under names such as Andris and Europrisma, sized for a basin or a single tap and usually fitted under or above a sink. There are flat wall hung electric storage heaters, of which the Velis family is the best known shape, and instantaneous electric heaters in the Aures line that store nothing at all. Then there are the heating appliances, meaning gas boilers, which are a separate conversation entirely.
Larger stored hot water cylinders also carry the name, both direct models heated by immersion elements and indirect models heated by a boiler coil. Those are far less common in London than the market leading cylinder brands, which is exactly why owners struggle to get straight answers about them. The brand is genuinely everywhere in this country. The large cylinder specifically is not.

Look at where it is and how big it is. If it is a tall insulated vessel standing in an airing cupboard or a plant cupboard, connected to pipework running to the rest of the property, that is a cylinder. The two get called the same thing constantly and they are not remotely the same job.
The reason this matters is practical. A small electric heater feeds one outlet, has a single element and a simple control, and when it fails only that tap loses hot water. A cylinder feeds the whole property, may be heated by a boiler, carries a set of inlet and safety controls, and when it fails the household notices immediately. Diagnosis, parts, access and the replacement decision are different on each.
Before you ring anybody, take one photograph of the whole appliance in place and one of the data plate. Whether you have a heater or a cylinder is the first thing any competent engineer needs to know, and a picture settles it in seconds.
How do I identify which Ariston unit I have
Read the data plate. Every unit carries a printed label giving the model designation, the capacity in litres and a serial number, and that label is the only reliable identification. On small heaters it is usually on the underside or back edge of the casing. On a cylinder it sits on the front of the insulation jacket. That is the direct versus indirect distinction and it removes whole categories of fault from consideration. If your Ariston is direct and heated by electricity alone, no boiler fault can possibly be the reason you have no hot water, and anyone who starts there is wasting your time.

The cylinder is also protected by relief valves that will discharge to a tundish and out through the wall if pressure or temperature go where they should not.
The external vessel approach is worth understanding because it is the opposite of what the best known British cylinder brand does. An external vessel is a visible, replaceable, widely available component that any competent engineer recognises on sight. That is a straightforward advantage in serviceability terms. The trade off is that it is one more thing bolted to your pipework, it takes cupboard space, and it is a wearing part with a service life of its own rather than an arrangement built into the vessel.
What actually fails on an Ariston water heater or cylinder
On the small and flat electric heaters, the failures are overwhelmingly the element, the thermostat or control board, and the sacrificial anode that protects the tank. Those units are compact and sealed, which is good for standing loss and bad for access. A slim wall hung heater in a fitted kitchen often has to come off the wall before anything can be reached, and that is a labour cost the appliance forces on you whatever the part costs.
On a cylinder, the pattern is the one we see across every brand. The pressure reducing valve on the inlet drifts or partially blocks, and the household notices poor hot water flow or hot and cold badly out of balance at a mixer. The expansion relief valve begins to pass and water appears at the tundish during reheat. The motorised valve that sends boiler heat to the cylinder coil fails, giving hot radiators and cold taps, which has nothing to do with the cylinder at all.
The vessel itself is the rarest failure and the only one that cannot be repaired. Everything in the list above is a component attached to the cylinder, and replacing a component is ordinary work. It is not a comment on how well the appliances are built. It is a comment on how many of them are in the ground here and therefore how many spares sit on a shelf within driving distance.

Store temperature is the part you control. Running the appliance permanently hotter than the household needs speeds scale formation and buys nothing that correct sizing would not have given you. If every tap has to be mixed heavily with cold before anyone can use it, you are paying to make scale.

A thermal store keeps heated water on the heating side and passes mains water through a heat exchanger on the way to the tap, so the faults, the parts and the service work all differ. Establishing which you have is step one.
Should you repair an Ariston or replace it
Repair, unless the vessel itself is leaking or a proprietary part on a discontinued model genuinely cannot be sourced. That is the short answer for cylinders and it holds far more often than replacement quotes imply. A drifted inlet valve, a passing relief valve, a tired expansion vessel, a burnt out element or a failed motorised valve are all routine repairs on an appliance with plenty of life left.
