Heatrae Sadia is the Norwich based manufacturer behind Megaflo, the best known unvented hot water cylinder in Britain, and it sits within the Baxi Heating group. If you have a tall white insulated cylinder in an airing cupboard with a data badge on the front and no cold water tank in the loft, there is a good chance it is one of theirs. The company also makes electric boilers, small unvented water heaters and boiling water taps, so the name turns up on several very different appliances in the same property. This page explains what the range actually contains, how to work out which model you own, what fails on them, and what a London owner should know before anyone quotes for repair or replacement. Its most recognised product by a long distance is Megaflo, the unvented stainless steel cylinder range that made mains pressure hot water normal in British houses. When somebody says they have a Megaflo, they are naming a Heatrae Sadia product, and when somebody says they have a Heatrae Sadia, nine times out of ten in London they mean a Megaflo.
The rest of the catalogue matters because it causes confusion. Heatrae Sadia also makes Amptec electric flow boilers, the Electromax combined electric boiler and stored water unit, small unvented water heaters sold under names like Supreme, Express and Multipoint for kitchens and cloakrooms, undersink heaters, and instant boiling water taps. Those are all separate appliances with separate parts and separate faults. A badge on a small white box under a sink tells you nothing about the cylinder upstairs.
The brand comes up so often for reasons of history rather than marketing. Megaflo arrived early and was specified heavily through the conversion and refurbishment boom, so a very large installed base now exists across London. That is why parts questions about older models come up constantly, and why it is worth knowing which generation you have before anybody orders anything.

Which Heatrae Sadia cylinder do I have
Read the data badge. Every Megaflo carries a printed label on the front of the casing giving the model name, the capacity in litres and a serial number, and that label is the only reliable identification. Photograph it before you ring anybody, because the first thing a competent engineer or parts counter will ask for is the exact model designation rather than a description of the cupboard.
If the badge has gone, which happens in properties that have been decorated around, there are still useful signals. Look at the top of the cylinder and at the cold feed pipework entering it. A Megaflo that handles expansion internally has no separate expansion vessel hanging off the cold feed, so if you see a bare cold connection and no additional grey or red vessel on a bracket, that points at the Megaflo design rather than at a Telford, Gledhill or Albion. Note whether the immersion fitting is a plain screw in boss or a larger branded one, and whether the unit is round, slimline or horizontal.
Generation matters as much as the model name. The original Megaflo cylinders and the later Megaflo Eco family are not the same appliance in service terms, even though they look similar behind the insulation. A cylinder fitted in the 1990s or early 2000s is an older generation, and the control group, immersion fitting and available spares differ from a current Eco. If an engineer starts quoting you parts before reading the badge, that is a warning sign, not efficiency.
Take a photograph of the data badge and of the pipework entering the top and the cold feed before you call anybody. Those two pictures answer most of the questions a parts supplier will ask and save a wasted visit.
The Megaflo range, model by model
The current family is Megaflo Eco, and the variants exist to solve different installation problems rather than to sell different levels of quality. The standard Eco is the round indirect cylinder heated by a boiler coil, which is what sits in most London airing cupboards. The Eco Plus sits above it in the range. There is a solar version with a second coil for a solar thermal circuit, a slimline version for narrow cupboards, a horizontal version for lofts and low spaces, and a system fit version supplied with more of the controls and connections pre assembled so the installation is quicker and tidier.
Alongside the indirect models there are direct versions, heated by immersion elements alone with no boiler coil. Those turn up in flats with no gas appliance and in properties on electric heating. If your cylinder is direct, a boiler fault cannot be the cause of no hot water, because the boiler was never heating the water in the first place. That single distinction saves a lot of wasted diagnosis.
Heatrae Sadia has also sold cylinders outside the Megaflo name over the years, including the PremierPlus range, which used a conventional external expansion vessel rather than the internal arrangement Megaflo is known for. If your cylinder carries the manufacturer badge but has a separate vessel on the cold feed, you are probably looking at one of those rather than at a Megaflo, and the service procedure is different. How a Megaflo handles expansion without an external vessel
Water expands when it is heated, and an unvented cylinder is sealed, so that expansion has to be absorbed somewhere. Most manufacturers bolt an external expansion vessel onto the cold feed as a separate component with its own diaphragm. Megaflo instead holds a pocket of air inside the vessel itself, retained behind an internal baffle, and that trapped air takes up the expansion. It is the defining design feature of the range and the thing most owners have never heard of.
The advantage is a tidier installation with fewer components to fail and nothing hanging off the pipework. The trade off is that the air pocket is slowly absorbed into the water over time, and restoring it is a manufacturer specific procedure carried out as part of the annual service. It is not difficult for an engineer who has done it before. It is, however, exactly the step that gets quietly skipped when a cylinder is serviced by whoever was cheapest that year, and the consequences show up later as a safety valve that starts discharging to the tundish every time the cylinder reheats.
None of that is criticism of the build quality. The stainless work on a Megaflo is good. The point is narrower. The design depends on a specific procedure and on the engineer knowing the model, whereas an external vessel is a commodity part any plumber can recognise and replace from the van. Over twenty years and several changes of engineer, that difference is worth understanding before you buy.
A tundish that drips every time the cylinder heats up is telling you a safety valve is passing. On a Megaflo the loss of the internal air pocket is one of the common reasons for that, and it is investigated, not capped.
The immersion heater is a branded part
Megaflo does not use the plain screw in immersion element that fits most other cylinders. The element is a manufacturer specific part matched to the model, which means an engineer cannot simply pull a generic element off a merchant shelf and fit it. If you have ever been told that changing the immersion in your Megaflo needs a part ordered in, this is why.
It is not a bad component and it is not difficult to change once you have the right one in your hand. The issue is purely logistical. A cylinder that takes a standard element turns a dead immersion into a same visit repair. A cylinder that takes a branded element turns the same job into a visit, an order and a second visit, unless the engineer happens to be carrying that exact part. Older generations compound this, because the element that fitted a cylinder from twenty years ago is not necessarily the one stocked for a current model.
There is a second, entirely separate problem that has nothing to do with the manufacturer. An immersion element needs physical clearance to withdraw from the cylinder, and that length is substantial. In London we regularly find cylinders installed so close to a wall, a boxed in soil stack or a cupboard frame that the element cannot come out without dismantling joinery or tilting the cylinder. That is an installation failure. If a new cylinder is going in, ask the installer to show you where the element will withdraw to before the cylinder is set in place.
What actually fails on a Heatrae Sadia cylinder
Almost everything that fails on a Megaflo is a component attached to the cylinder rather than the cylinder itself. The stainless vessel is the part with the longest life, and in a properly serviced installation it generally outlives several sets of valves and elements. What we are called to are the wearing parts on the cold feed, the electrical controls and the immersion heater.
The pressure reducing valve on the inlet drifts or blocks, and the household notices poor hot water flow or an imbalance between hot and cold at the taps. The expansion relief valve starts passing, usually announcing itself as water running from the tundish. The temperature and pressure relief valve is a separate safety device and any discharge from it is investigated properly rather than treated as a nuisance. On the heating side, the motorised valve that sends boiler heat to the cylinder coil is a very common cause of hot radiators and cold taps, and it has nothing to do with the cylinder at all.
Loss of the internal air pocket sits alongside those as a Megaflo specific item, and it is worth naming because it is so often misdiagnosed. An owner reports intermittent water at the tundish, an engineer with no experience of the range replaces a relief valve, the symptom returns within weeks, and everyone concludes the cylinder is finished. It usually is not. The other common pattern is an immersion element that has scaled, run hot under that scale and burnt out.

Can you still get parts for an older Megaflo
For current Megaflo Eco models, parts and service kits are widely available and the dealer network is one of the strongest in the market. That is a genuine advantage of buying the best known name in the category and it should be weighed properly against the design points above.
For older generations the picture is more mixed, and this is where owners get caught out. Valves, thermostats and relief components on an older cylinder are often still obtainable or have a recognised equivalent, because those are broadly standard plumbing parts. The manufacturer specific items, particularly the immersion element and anything tied to a discontinued model, are where the availability question bites. The honest position is that some parts for a long discontinued cylinder are ordered rather than stocked, and lead times vary.
The practical consequence is a judgement call rather than a rule. On an older cylinder where a standard valve has failed, repair is usually straightforward and obviously worth doing. On an older cylinder where a proprietary part has failed, the wait and the cost of that part start to count against a vessel that already has years behind it, and a replacement conversation becomes reasonable. What is not reasonable is somebody telling you parts are unobtainable without having read the model number off the badge and checked.
What London water does to a Megaflo
Almost the whole London supply area is hard water, and that is the single biggest influence on how a Heatrae Sadia cylinder ages here. Scale deposits on the boiler coil and on the immersion element, both of which are heat transfer surfaces. A scaled coil transfers heat more slowly, so the household experiences a cylinder that takes longer to recover between showers. A scaled element runs hotter than it should under its own insulating layer, and that is what shortens element life.
Store temperature makes it worse. Running the cylinder far hotter than the household actually needs, permanently, accelerates scale formation and buys nothing that correct sizing would not have given you. If your hot water is set so high that every tap has to be mixed heavily with cold, you are paying for scale.
Where the cylinder lives matters too. In a Victorian conversion with the cylinder in a first floor cupboard, everything below it is somebody's ceiling, so a weeping joint or a passing valve that nobody noticed for a fortnight becomes a decorating job as well as a plumbing one. In new builds with liquid screed over underfloor heating, the hot water and heating circuits want different flow temperatures and the design has to separate them properly. And in purpose built blocks running a thermal store rather than an unvented cylinder, none of this applies at all, because that is a different appliance with different faults and different parts.

Repair, unless the stainless vessel itself has failed. That is the short answer and it holds far more often than replacement quotes imply. A passing relief valve, a drifted pressure reducing valve, a burnt out element, a failed motorised valve or a lost internal air pocket are all ordinary repairs on a cylinder with plenty of life left, and none of them justify taking the vessel out.
The genuine replacement case is a vessel that is weeping. Stainless cannot be patched, so once the vessel itself is leaking the cylinder is finished regardless of how healthy every other component is. The other honest replacement cases are a cylinder that is badly undersized for how the household now lives, one where a proprietary part on a long discontinued model cannot be sourced in reasonable time, and one where the installation itself is wrong in ways that cannot be corrected around the existing unit.
What should make you pause is a quote for a new cylinder produced without a diagnosis. If nobody has identified which part has failed, nobody has established that the vessel is the problem. Ask which component has been tested and what the result was. Replacing a repairable cylinder is the most expensive mistake available in an airing cupboard, and a proper unvented cylinder repair resolves the large majority of Megaflo faults without the vessel being touched.
A weeping stainless vessel is a replacement. A failed valve, thermostat, element or motorised valve is not. Establish which one you have before you accept any quote.
What to ask before anyone quotes you for a replacement
Start with identification. Ask what model and capacity is on the data badge, and whether the replacement being proposed matches the way the property actually uses hot water rather than simply matching the litres of the old one. Then ask what has been tested. A quote that follows from a named failed component is a different document from a quote that follows from a glance.
If you are replacing, the design questions are worth asking out loud. Whether expansion is handled internally or by an external vessel, whether the immersion is a standard screw in element or a branded one, whether the inlet controls are individual replaceable parts or a single assembly, and where the element will physically withdraw to in that cupboard. None of those change the price much and all of them change what the next twenty years feel like. Ask as well whether the incoming mains flow rate and pressure have been measured at the property, because an unvented cylinder is only as good as the supply feeding it and a great many London conversions cannot deliver what the owner assumes.
Finally, ask about the service. Every unvented cylinder needs an annual service, and on a Megaflo that service includes the manufacturer specific step for the internal air pocket. A cylinder that is serviced properly every year by somebody who knows the model is a good cylinder. One that is not will present you with the same symptom repeatedly until somebody does the step that was being skipped.
