Kingspan Albion Cylinders and the Ultrasteel Range

A Kingspan Albion cylinder is a hot water cylinder built by Albion Water Heaters, a West Bromwich manufacturer that forms part of the Kingspan Group, and the range you are most likely to have is the Ultrasteel: an unvented duplex stainless steel vessel fed straight off the incoming cold main, with an external expansion vessel and an inlet control group on the cold feed. Kingspan and Albion are the same company rather than two competing cylinders, which is the thing most people want settled before they go any further. What is a Kingspan Albion cylinder

It is a hot water cylinder made by Albion Water Heaters, a long established British cylinder manufacturer, sold under the Kingspan Albion name because Albion is part of the Kingspan Group. In a London home it is almost always an unvented cylinder from the Ultrasteel range: a sealed, mains pressure hot water store that takes its supply directly from the incoming cold main, keeps its safety and control components in a group on the cold feed, and handles the expansion of heated water in a separate vessel alongside.

It usually stands in an airing cupboard or a plant cupboard, with a discharge pipe running from the safety valves through a tundish and out of the building. The tundish is the open gap in that pipe, and it exists so anybody can see whether a safety valve is passing water. If yours is dripping, that is information rather than a nuisance.

The only reliable identification is the data plate on the side of the cylinder, which carries the model name, the capacity in litres and a serial number. Guessing from the pipework is how a vented cylinder ends up quoted as an unvented one.

How Kingspan and Albion relate to each other

Kingspan is the group and Albion is the cylinder manufacturer within it. Albion made cylinders in its own right long before the group connection, which is why older installations carry Albion branding alone and newer ones carry both names. Nothing about the appliance changes when a badge changes, so an older Albion and a newer Kingspan Albion of the same model are identical as far as servicing and spares are concerned.

Two things muddy the naming. The group is far better known outside the trade for building insulation than for hot water, so searching the group name alone returns a great deal that has nothing to do with your airing cupboard. And the group has more than one cylinder line, so householders reasonably describe anything under that umbrella as a Kingspan cylinder. That is fine in conversation and useless when ordering a part.

So stop using the group name once you are speaking to an engineer or a merchant. Give the model name and the capacity from the data plate, and photograph the plate while you are standing there. A parts request made on the group name alone earns a question back every time, and a wrong part ordered on a guess turns one visit into two.

What the Ultrasteel range actually is

Ultrasteel is Albion's unvented stainless steel range, and it is the product most people mean when they say they have a Kingspan cylinder. The vessel is duplex stainless steel, which is the right material for a mains pressure store: it copes with the chloride content of a UK supply without a sacrificial anode to inspect or replace, which is one fewer thing for a service to skip.

The range is built in the usual forms rather than as one product. Indirect models carry a coil and are heated by a boiler with an immersion as backup. Direct models have no coil and run on immersion elements alone, which is what you find in flats without a gas supply. Twin coil versions take a second heat source such as solar thermal. Capacities run from the small vessels suited to a one bedroom flat to the large ones a two bathroom house needs.

Albion also makes appliances that are not unvented cylinders, including thermal store products for buildings on a communal system. That distinction matters in London, because a thermal store and an unvented cylinder look broadly alike in a cupboard and behave completely differently. If you live in a purpose built block, confirm which you have before anybody quotes to replace it.

Where Kingspan Albion cylinders turn up in London homes

Most of the Ultrasteel cylinders we attend sit in one of two settings: Victorian and Edwardian conversions where an old vented cylinder was replaced, and newer flats and houses where an unvented cylinder was specified from the start. In a conversion the cylinder is usually boxed into a first floor cupboard with joinery built tight around it, and the constraint on any future work is access rather than the cylinder.

In new build houses and flats the cylinder sits in a plant cupboard with the controls and often an underfloor heating manifold, and the floor is very commonly liquid screed over underfloor pipework. Screed changes the rules for any work that moves a cylinder or alters pipe runs, because you cannot lift a board to see what is underneath. Say so before a quote is given, because an engineer who assumes joists will price the job wrongly.

Purpose built blocks matter most for identification, since many run a communal system with a thermal store in each flat rather than an unvented cylinder. Loft conversions are the fourth case, where a new shower room needs a pressure the old vented system could never give.

How an Ultrasteel is built and why that matters in ten years

Four decisions determine whether you are still glad of an unvented cylinder a decade after it went in: what the vessel is made of, how expansion is handled, whether the immersion is a standard element, and whether the inlet controls are separate parts or one assembly. The Ultrasteel takes the serviceable route on all four, and that is the substance of the case for it.

Expansion is taken up by a vessel mounted outside the cylinder on the cold feed. That is the less elegant of the two approaches in this market, and we prefer it anyway. The vessel is an ordinary component with an ordinary failure mode: the diaphragm eventually perishes, the symptom shows at the tundish, and an engineer fits a replacement from the van without depending on the manufacturer still supporting that model years later.

The immersion uses a standard threaded boss, so the element is a merchant part rather than a branded one and any engineer carries the tool. The inlet control group is assembled from discrete components with their own part numbers, so a passing expansion relief valve is a valve change rather than a change of the whole group. None of that is glamorous, and all of it is the difference between a repair finished on the first visit and one that waits on a delivery.

What actually fails on a Kingspan Albion cylinder

The wearing parts around the vessel, not the vessel itself. Across the Ultrasteel cylinders we attend in London the faults are overwhelmingly an inlet pressure reducing valve drifting out of adjustment, an expansion relief valve passing, a temperature and pressure relief valve passing, an expansion vessel diaphragm perishing, an immersion element burning out, or a motorised valve on the heating side sticking. Every one of those is a repair.

The most common single call is water dripping from the tundish or from the discharge pipe outside. That is the safety system doing its job and telling you a valve is passing. The work is to find out why rather than to stop the drip, and on this cylinder the answer is usually a spent expansion vessel, a worn expansion relief valve or a drifted pressure reducing valve. Anybody who suggests capping a discharge pipe instead of diagnosing it should be shown the door.

The second most common is no hot water from the immersion, and in London that is normally scale rather than age. Scale forms on the element sheath, insulates it, and the element then runs hotter than it was built to until it fails. That is a stock part and a single visit. The genuinely terminal fault is a weeping stainless vessel, which cannot be patched and is uncommon on a serviced duplex vessel.

A dripping tundish is never something to silence. It means a safety valve is passing and something upstream of it needs investigating.

Ultrasteel compared with Megaflo and Telford

On architecture the Ultrasteel sits with Telford rather than with Megaflo, and if serviceability is what you care about that counts in its favour. All three use a duplex stainless vessel and in all three the vessel is rarely what fails, so the honest comparison is about the parts around it rather than about build quality.

Megaflo Eco holds its expansion in an air pocket inside the vessel behind an internal baffle instead of using an external vessel. That is neater. The trade off is that the air pocket is slowly absorbed into the water and restoring it is a manufacturer specific step carried out at the annual service. It is simple for an engineer who has done it before, and it is also the step most often skipped when a cylinder is serviced by whoever quoted lowest. Megaflo also uses a branded immersion arrangement rather than a plain screw in element, which is a dependency rather than a defect.

Telford's Tempest range takes the same external vessel and standard element route as the Ultrasteel, so those two are close. Where Megaflo wins is familiarity and stock: more engineers have worked on one and more merchants hold the parts, which is worth real money in a hurry. We fit and service all three. Our preference for the external vessel designs is about long term repairability, not about one manufacturer building a better cylinder.

How Kingspan Albion cylinders cope with London hard water

Hard water does more to shorten the life of a London cylinder than any difference between brands, and almost the whole London supply area is hard. Scale forms on the heating coil and on the immersion element, and on both surfaces it acts as an insulating blanket: reheat slows, the boiler or the element works longer for the same hot water, and eventually the element cooks itself. An Ultrasteel is no more immune than anything else, but the element that scales is a stock part, which makes the consequence cheaper.

Two decisions at the point of purchase are worth more than anything you can do afterwards. Specify an Incoloy or titanium sheathed immersion element rather than the cheapest copper one, because a better sheath tolerates scaling for much longer. And resist running the store hotter than the household needs to compensate for a cylinder that is too small, because permanently high store temperatures accelerate scaling on both surfaces and buy nothing correct sizing would not have given you.

The third point is physical rather than chemical. An element needs real clearance to withdraw, and in a conversion the cylinder is usually boxed in tightly on a first floor landing. Ask the installer to show you where the element will come out to. If the answer involves taking a cupboard apart, the cheapest repair on this appliance has just been made expensive for the life of the installation.

An Incoloy or titanium element and a sensible store temperature do more for a London cylinder than the badge on the front.

What a service on an Ultrasteel should include

A proper annual service is an inspection and exercise of every safety and control component, not a glance and an invoice. On an Ultrasteel that means checking and operating the temperature and pressure relief valve and the expansion relief valve, inspecting the discharge pipework and the tundish, checking the external expansion vessel and its diaphragm, confirming the inlet control group is doing its job, inspecting the immersion and its wiring, and looking over the vessel and connections for any trace of weeping.

Because the range is built from discrete parts, the service can be real maintenance rather than a checklist exercise. Where a wearing component is visibly near the end, changing it on the visit beats paying for a second attendance when it lets go at the tundish. Ask for the worn parts to be shown to you.

Servicing matters for a second reason that applies to every brand here. Manufacturer warranties on unvented cylinders are conditional on annual servicing and on the records being kept, so a long warranty quoted without a word about that condition is worth less than the person quoting it would like you to think. Should a Kingspan Albion cylinder be repaired or replaced

Repaired, far more often than the quote in your inbox suggests. Relief valves, the inlet pressure reducing valve, the expansion vessel, the immersion element and the motorised valve are all replaceable on a cylinder that may have many years left in the steel, and on this range they are ordinary parts rather than scarce ones. Replacing a repairable cylinder is the most expensive mistake available in an airing cupboard.

Replacement is the honest answer in a short list of cases. A weeping or corroded stainless vessel is terminal, because it cannot be patched. A cylinder undersized or badly positioned from the beginning is a replacement argument even when nothing has broken, because no repair will make the household happy with it. If a heat pump is in the plan, say so before anything is ordered, because a heat pump runs at a much lower flow temperature and needs a far larger coil that cannot be added later.

What drives the cost of a replacement is the physical job rather than the badge: whether the old cylinder can come out of the cupboard and the new one go in, whether pipework needs rerouting, whether a compliant discharge route to outside already exists, whether the incoming mains can feed an unvented cylinder at the flow rate the household expects, and what the property does for hot water meanwhile. Get a diagnosis first, then ask which of those is driving the figure.

Because a safety valve is passing water and the discharge system is showing you. On an Ultrasteel the usual causes are a perished expansion vessel diaphragm, a worn expansion relief valve, or an inlet pressure reducing valve that has drifted out of adjustment. All three are ordinary repairs. Never cap or plug a discharge pipe to stop the drip, because the discharge exists to protect the cylinder.

Megaflo is more widely stocked and more engineers have worked on one, which is worth real money in a hurry.
Does a Kingspan Albion cylinder work with a heat pump
Only if you buy a cylinder specified for one, with a far larger coil. A heat pump delivers water at a much lower flow temperature than a gas boiler, so the coil needs much greater surface area to transfer the same energy. A standard boiler specification cylinder connected to a heat pump will reheat slowly, and no adjustment to the controls afterwards will fix an undersized coil.
