Worcester Bosch vs Vaillant: An Engineer's Verdict

For a London home where the owner intends to look after the system, we would fit a Vaillant ecoTEC. For a let property, or anywhere a boiler has to be working again the same day it fails, we would fit a Worcester Bosch Greenstar. Both are properly engineered and both will pass a decade in a clean system, so this is not a question of which is the better machine in the abstract. It is a question of which failure modes you are willing to live with, how fast the parts arrive, and how each behaves in water as hard as ours.

Which is better, Worcester Bosch or Vaillant

Neither is a bad boiler, and anyone who tells you one of them is rubbish has usually just had a bad week with a single unit. Vaillant builds a stainless steel heat exchanger and a hydraulic block that comes apart in a sensible order, which rewards a system kept clean. Worcester wins on parts you can put your hand on the same morning, which is what matters when a tenant has no heating.

Efficiency is not the deciding factor and has not been for years. At the top of both ranges the seasonal figures sit within a fraction of each other, and that gap is smaller than the difference a flow temperature left at maximum makes on the same boiler. What decides whether you get six years or sixteen is water quality, whether a filter was fitted, whether the system was cleaned and dosed at installation, and whether anyone has serviced it since.

The heat exchanger is the real difference between them

The main heat exchanger is where the two brands genuinely diverge. Worcester has long favoured cast aluminium silicon alloy, Vaillant uses stainless steel. Aluminium moves heat extremely well and casts into a compact block, but it is sensitive to the chemistry of the water sitting in it. Stainless is more tolerant of that chemistry and more forgiving of an owner who has never heard of inhibitor.

That shows up as two different sorts of bad news. An aluminium exchanger that has spent years without inhibitor, or in a system where a leak keeps drawing in fresh water, corrodes from the inside. You find a chalky white oxide in the waterways, the condensate trap blocks with the debris that washes out of it, and eventually it weeps. A stainless exchanger in the same abused system is far less likely to corrode, but the waterways are narrow, iron sludge from old radiators will still choke them, and a choked exchanger overheats locally and makes the boiler cycle and bang.

That is the honest trade. Aluminium asks you to control the water chemistry. Stainless asks you to control the debris. A magnetic filter on the return and correctly dosed inhibitor deal with both, and in a Victorian conversion with original steel pipework buried in the walls that filter is not optional on either brand.

If a system has never had a filter and the radiators run cold at the bottom, sort the water side out before the boiler is chosen. Both brands fail early in dirty water, and a new heat exchanger plumbed into old sludge is a short story.

What actually fails on a Worcester Greenstar

On a Worcester combi the recurring call is the diverter valve. The symptom is hot water that goes lukewarm, or radiators that warm up every time somebody runs a tap, and the cause is usually the diverter cartridge rather than the whole valve body. It is a serviceable part, it sits behind the front panel in the hydraulic block, and the cartridge is a stocked item.

After that, in rough order of how often we see it: the plate heat exchanger scaling on the domestic side so hot water flow drops away, the condensate trap or siphon blocking with debris and locking the boiler out, the fan bearing going noisy and then failing on start up, the ignition electrode drifting out of position or burning back, and the pressure sensor reading nonsense so the boiler refuses to fire. Circuit boards fail too, though on a dry, well ventilated install they are not the first thing we reach for. Most of that list is bolt on parts with a clear diagnostic route, which is the practical virtue of this boiler.

  • Diverter valve cartridge: lukewarm hot water, or heating warming when a tap is opened.
  • Plate heat exchanger scaled on the domestic side: hot water flow falls away, worse in hard water.
  • Condensate trap or siphon blocked with exchanger debris: intermittent lockouts and a gurgling noise.
  • Fan: noisy start up, then a lockout before ignition is attempted.
  • Ignition electrode and lead: repeated lockouts that clear for a day and come back.

What actually fails on a Vaillant ecoTEC

On a Vaillant ecoTEC the most common visit is an ignition fault, and the cause is usually the electrode assembly, the lead, or a condensate problem rather than anything expensive. The diverter valve is next, with the same lukewarm hot water symptom as on the Worcester, normally cured with the cartridge and motor rather than the whole block. Pressure sensors in the hydraulic block come third.

The ecoTEC is a tidy machine to work on. The front panel comes away cleanly, components are laid out in logical groups, and the fault code lands you close to the actual part rather than pointing vaguely at a system. Ignition faults in particular tell you enough to work with, which is why we have a page on the Vaillant F28 fault and another on the Vaillant F29 fault: a boiler that lights and then drops out is a different conversation from one that never lights at all.

  • Ignition electrode, lead or spark gap: repeated lockouts, often worse in cold weather.

Which one copes better with London hard water

Neither resists limescale, and any claim that one of them does should be treated carefully. In a combi from either brand the domestic plate heat exchanger takes the damage, because it is the surface where incoming hard water is heated hardest and fastest. In London it is effectively a sacrificial component and it will need attention at some point in the life of the boiler.

The difference is only in how much of a job that is, and it is not much of one either way. On both brands the plate exchanger is a front accessed part on a pair of fixings, so it is a changeable item rather than a strip down, and on both it can sometimes be chemically cleaned in place. What we would say plainly is that the fittings protecting it matter far more than the badge. A scale reducer on the cold mains feed to the boiler, and a hot water temperature set to what you actually need rather than wound to maximum, will do more for either brand than choosing between them ever will. Every degree above what you need accelerates the carbonate coming out of solution onto that plate.

Where the property stores hot water rather than heating it on demand, the scale problem moves off the boiler entirely and onto the cylinder coil and the immersion, and the boiler brand matters much less. On a boiler replacement where the system is old and has never been cleaned, the stainless heat exchanger is the safer bet of the two.

A combi in hard water that has lost hot water flow while the heating is fine is nearly always the plate heat exchanger. That is a diagnosis you can reach before anyone quotes for a new boiler.

Which is easier to diagnose and service

Vaillant, on the current ranges and by a clear margin on older ones. The ecoTEC gives you a readable fault code and a diagnostic menu that lets an engineer interrogate the boiler directly, read live values and test individual components rather than inferring the fault from behaviour. That turns a difficult intermittent problem into a shorter visit, and a shorter visit is money you do not spend.

Worcester has closed most of that gap on the recent Greenstar ranges, which display codes and support proper diagnostics. But there are plenty of older Worcester units in London flats whose entire diagnostic output is a coloured light, and on those the engineer works from combustion readings, component tests and experience rather than from the boiler telling him anything useful. If you are replacing one of those, you are buying better diagnostics whichever way you go.

That difference shows up on every boiler diagnosis visit, because the time spent reaching a component is time on the clock whatever the badge on the front says.

Which brand has better parts availability in London

Worcester, comfortably. Common Worcester parts sit on merchant shelves across London, and for a boiler that has failed on a Friday afternoon in a tenanted flat that is not a small advantage. It is often the difference between a repair today and a repair on Monday, and it applies to the older ranges as well as the current ones.

Vaillant support is good and genuine parts are readily available, but on older or less common models a part is more likely to be a next day order than a collection. For a homeowner who can live without heating overnight that is nothing. For a landlord with a tenant, or a family in January, it can be the whole decision. Non genuine cartridges and sensors exist for both brands, and while some are perfectly serviceable they can invalidate a manufacturer warranty, so we would not fit one to a boiler still inside its warranty period without saying so first.

One practical point before you choose. Ask whoever is quoting which brand they actually carry stock for and work on weekly. An engineer who fits one brand by default knows its quirks and carries the right service kit. Across our twenty engineers we work on both, but familiarity in the person holding the spanner is worth more than a marginal specification difference.

Does the property change the answer

Yes, more than the brand comparison does. The building decides what kind of appliance should be going in, and only after that does the badge matter. Getting those two the wrong way round is the most common mistake we see in London boiler replacements.

In a one bathroom flat in a Victorian conversion, a correctly sized combi from either brand is usually right, but the flue route and the gas supply are what actually shape the job. Original pipework buried in walls, a gas run that was adequate for a seventies appliance and is not adequate now, and a flue that has to terminate somewhere acceptable are the real constraints, and both manufacturers make a shallow unit for exactly this situation. In a house with two bathrooms and a family we would push you towards a system boiler and an unvented cylinder rather than a very large combi. In a purpose built block running a Pulsacoil thermal store, the comparison may not apply at all, because there is no gas boiler in the flat to replace.

New builds deserve their own sentence. Where there is liquid screed over underfloor heating, what matters is that the boiler modulates low and runs happily at a low flow temperature, because an appliance that cannot turn itself down will short cycle all winter against a slab that only wants gentle heat. Both brands have models that do this and both have models that do not.

  • One bathroom conversion flat: a combi from either brand, with the flue route and gas supply checked before anything is ordered.
  • Family house with two bathrooms: a system boiler and an unvented cylinder, not a very large combi.
  • Block with a Pulsacoil thermal store: this comparison does not apply, the appliance is a different animal.
  • New build with underfloor heating: choose for low modulation and low flow temperature, not for the badge.

Which models in each range are worth the money

Within each brand the gap between the budget range and the proper range is wider than the gap between the brands. Our opinion is blunt. If you are buying Vaillant, buy from the ecoTEC plus family rather than the entry level range. If you are buying Worcester, the mid and upper Greenstar ranges are the ones worth paying for, and the smallest entry model belongs in a small flat rather than in a family house.

The reason is not snobbery about specification. The better ranges give a wider modulation range, better controls compatibility and a more serviceable layout, and modulation range is the thing non specialists ignore and engineers care about most. A boiler that cannot turn down far enough in a small, well insulated flat will fire, satisfy the room quickly, shut down and repeat that all evening, and every cycle is wear on the ignition components and the fan. An oversized boiler is not a safety margin, it is a fault you have paid extra for. Sizing comes from the heat loss of the property and the hot water demand, not from the size of the old boiler. Any quote that arrives without anyone asking how many bathrooms you have and what your mains flow rate is has been guessed.

Vaillant vs Ideal is the same question asked from the other end of the market, and it produces a different answer for the same reasons.

Both makers lean on warranty length in their marketing, which raises the obvious question. Is a long boiler warranty worth anything when the cover depends on an annual service being carried out and recorded every year without fail?

The verdict

If you will service the boiler every year and keep a filter on the system, fit a Vaillant ecoTEC. You get a stainless heat exchanger that tolerates imperfect water, a layout that is quick to diagnose and fault codes that shorten every future visit. If the property is let, or you simply want the shortest possible gap between a failure and a working boiler, fit a Worcester Greenstar, because same day parts across London is a benefit you feel on the worst day rather than the best one.

What we would not do is choose on brand loyalty, on a table of efficiency percentages, or on a showroom conversation about which name sounds more premium. The two are closer together than the marketing suggests. What is not close is sizing, system cleanliness, water treatment and whether anyone opens the case once a year, and every one of those is inside your control in a way the badge is not.

If your existing boiler is misbehaving and you are trying to work out whether this is a replacement conversation at all, get it diagnosed first. Plenty of boilers presented to us as finished turn out to be a diverter cartridge, a blocked trap or a scaled plate away from another decade of service, and replacing a repairable boiler is the most expensive mistake in this whole subject.

This is a narrower comparison than which boiler is best across the whole market, and that is deliberate, because a verdict between two specific ranges is worth more to somebody about to buy than a ranking of everything on sale.

It depends on registration and on evidence of maintenance. Both manufacturers expect the boiler to be registered after installation and the annual service to be carried out and recorded, and both expect the system to be cleaned and dosed. Ask for the commissioning pages in the manual to be filled in with real readings on the day, and keep the registration confirmation somewhere you will find it years later.
Should I pick the boiler or the installer first
The installer. A correctly sized boiler from either brand, commissioned properly on a cleaned and dosed system with a filter fitted, will outlive a premium model installed badly. Ask whoever quotes which brand they work on weekly and carry stock for, and ask how they arrived at the size. If nobody asked about your bathrooms or your mains flow rate, the sizing was a guess.
Is it worth repairing an old Worcester or Vaillant rather than replacing it
Often yes, and this is where money gets wasted. A diverter cartridge, a blocked condensate trap or a scaled plate heat exchanger all present as a boiler that seems finished, and all three are ordinary repairs on a unit with years left in it. Get a proper diagnosis before you accept a replacement quote, particularly if parts for the model are still supported.
